Continuing its domination in the awards race at large, Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight earned three nominations from the group, including two for supporting actors Naomie Harris and Mahershala Ali, and an additional nomination for its ensemble cast. Harris is joined by two other black actresses in the supporting class (Fences‘ Viola Davis and Hidden Figures‘ Octavia Spencer), marking the first time since 2008 that a majority of the category’s nominees are people of color.
La La Land — currently at the head of the pack in the Best Picture race — is noticeably absent from the ensemble category, though it’s likely because the film is largely carried by co-leads Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, who both landed nominations in the lead categories here. Looking back to 2013, Gravity — a one-woman show fronted by Sandra Bullock — similarly missed out on a SAG ensemble nomination, though it ultimately maintained prime positioning as the presumptive Best Picture runner-up at the Academy Awards, where it won seven Oscars including Best Director.

Manchester by the Sea tallied the most nominations across all film categories, however, having notched four nominations (three in the individual categories, for Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, and Lucas Hedges, one for ensemble). Viggo Mortensen’s Captain Fantastic also made a surprise appearance among film nominees, landing two total nominations for its ensemble cast and its leading actor. Emily Blunt secured her first individual SAG nomination for her performance in The Girl on the Train, joining Stone, Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins), Natalie Portman (Jackie), and Amy Adams (Arrival) among the leading actress set. (Isabelle Huppert, who has dominated the critics awards thus far for her performance in Paul Verhoeven’s Elle, did not receive a nomination in the category.)
On the television side, Netflix’s The Crown appeared in multiple categories for its debut season, with stars John Lithgow and Claire Foy earning individual notices and the ensemble receiving an ensemble nomination on the dramatic  FX’s The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story tied with The Crown and Game of Thrones as SAG’s most-nominated programs of 2016, with stars Sarah Paulson, Sterling K. Brown, and Courtney B. Vance garnering individual nods.
Lifetime Achievement honoree Lily Tomlin also scored as a competitive nominee for her work on Grace and Frankie. The screen vet will square off against her series co-star, Jane Fonda, who received her second SAG nomination (first individual, as she was previously nominated as part of The Butler‘s ensemble cast in 2013) to date for the Netflix comedy.
Honoring film, television, and stunt performances by actors, SAG, which merged with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists in 2012, is comprised of nearly 200,000 film & television performers, radio personalities, and other commercial media professionals. Randomly-drawn nomination committees for television and film (2,500 members each from SAG and AFTRA) review For Your Consideration materials and vote on final nominees; final awards balloting then opens up to all active, paid-up SAG-AFTRA members — 121,546 in total this year.
SAG is the first major guild to announce its nominations before Oscar nominations balloting begins on Jan. 5; the Writers Guild of America honors nominees one day prior on Jan. 4, and the American Cinema Editors announce on Jan. 3. Throughout the Academy’s tight eight-day balloting period — which ends Jan. 13 — six major industry precursors with crossover Academy membership will announce their annual nominees, including the Art Directors Guild (Jan. 5), BAFTA (Jan. 10), the Cinema Audio Society (Jan. 10), the American Society of Cinematographers (Jan. 10), the Producers Guild of America (Jan. 10), and the Directors Guild of America (Jan. 12).

The 23rd annual SAG Awards will be handed out on Sunday, Jan. 29. The ceremony airs live on TNT and TBS at 8:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. PT. Check out the full list of nominees below.
